A World Divided On Truth

We live in a diverse society with multiple truths. These truths are derived from the morals and values that we, as individuals, hold. As we live our day-to-day lives, we see the world through our own lens that filters information in reference to our own truth. We are passionate about things that coincide with our truth. We become angry with those things that don’t align with our truth. We overlook things that we feel are not relevant to our truth and we demoralize other people by assuming that we share the same truth.
Relational thinking, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts; as we interact with one another, we tend to ignore the relational interaction of each other’s truths. We begin to judge others and make assumptions about them because of their misalignment with our morals and values, and vice versa, we are judged and assumptions are made about us because we do not share the same values and morals as someone else. This pattern of interaction is perpetuated throughout our culture and reflects how we function in our world.
We live in a nation that is continuously divided; a divide that is not just limited to Hipsters who fight to stay unplugged from the main streams of society, Feminist who refuse to be oppressed by a male dominated society and Conservative Christians who stand strongly against gay marriage. I am not proposing that we should set aside our morals and values; however, we should acknowledge that our truths are not the ultimate truths and that multiple truth and realities do exist. We, as a world trying to live together peacefully, need to set aside our, “either, or” thinking and transition to a “both, and” mindset.
